Thirty-nine soybean seed lots consisting of Bragg, Lee 68, Dare, Davis and Hill were studied under laboratory and field conditions. For these studies the lots were taken either intact (orginal seeds) and visually separated into different components (sound seed, wrinkle-coated seed, mechanically danaged seed, green colored seed, insect damaged seed, diseased seed and other). Original seed were evaluated through field emergence and standard germination test (first and final counts). Separated seed were studied by field emergence, root growth test and tetrazolium test (Potential germination, energy 1 - 2 and energy 1 - 3). Field emergence was conducted through a randomized complete block design, consisting of four replications with 3 counting dates, 7, 14, and 21 days after planting. Results showed differences among varieties at p = 0.1 level of probability. Good agreement between field emergence and percentage of sound seed in a lot was observed. A multiple correlation coefficient of R = 0.921 was obtained between field emergence and first and final countings in standard germination test and percentages of each component of a seed lot. Green seed showed persistently high vigor indices in all tests. Characteristics pattern reaction to tetrazolium (TZ) staining were detected for good seed, wrinkle-coated seed, mechanically damaged and insect damaged seed. Since such a close agreement was obtained, a fairly good indication of emergence in the field would be given by the values of TZ energy 1 - 3.
